Atelier de tricot islandais : Part II / Icelandic Knitting workshop Part II

Dans mon précédent billet «Atelier de tricot islandais avec Visit Iceland  Part I », je vous ai parlé de l’histoire du tricot islandais et de la conception des lopi.

In my previous post « Iceland knitting wokshop with Visit Iceland : Part I » , I’ve wrote about Icelandic knitting history and the sweaters named Lopi.

Durant l’atelier, Christine (trÍScote) nous a présenté la laine islandaise de la marque Ístex et sa magnifique palette de couleurs. Je ne suis pas une spécialiste de cette laine, ne l’ayant tricoté pour la première fois qu’à l’atelier mais je vais essayer de vous en parler.

During the workshop, Christine (trÍScote) introduced us the Icelandic wool from the yarn company Ístex and his wonderful wide choice of colours. I’m not a specialist about this yarn, I just knitted for the first time at the workshop but I will try to wrote about it. 

Les couleurs / The Colours

La couleur n’est pas vraiment unie, ni tout à fait chinée. Ístex mélange et mixe plusieurs couleurs ensemble au moment du cardage pour donner un « Golden heather » ou un Bleu Vert par exemple. Une fois le cardage terminé, la laine sera filée et l’on obtiendra des pelotes.

This is not a solid colour but not even a bicoloured wool. Ístex melt and mix different colours together during the carding process in order to get this kind of colours. That’s how they got a Golden heather, a burnt orange or an artic exposure blue. Once the carding done, the fiber will be spun and here’s what will be get this skeins.

Les laines / The Yarns :

Álafosslopi :

C’est la laine bulky de la marque. Elle se tricote avec du 6 ou 7 mm. C’est une laine chaude et légère parfaite pour les pulls destinés aux activités extérieures.

This is the bulky yarn. You can knit it with needle’s US 10 or 7mm. This yarn is warm and light, perfect for the outdoors activities.

Léttlopi :

C’est la laine worsted. Elle se tricote en 4.5 mm. C’est une laine chaude et légère, parfaite pour faire du jacquard et que l’on peut porter en intérieur aussi bien qu’en extérieur.

This is the worsterd weight yarn. You can knit it with needle’s US 7. This yarn is warm and light, perfect to do some Fair-Island design and you can wear in for indoor or outdoors activities.

Plötulopi :

C’est la laine mèche de la marque, on peut réaliser des pulls plus léger et plus souple qu’en utilisant la laine Álafosslopi en la tricotant avec des aiguilles 5 mm. Si la laine mèche casse durant le tricot, ce n’est pas très grave car on peut facilement la raccorder grâce à la longue fibre qui la compose. Cet effet peut être parfait pour faire des dégradés qui se fondent entre eux !

This is the unspun yarn. We can knit it with needle’s US 8 and make some lighter sweaters than using Álafosslopi. If the fibers broke, that’s not a big deal at all. You can easily joined the yarns because the fibers is really long. This way, we can do some wonderful shades !

Einband :

C’est la fil dentelle de la gamme ! Il se tricote allant des aiguilles 2 1/2 mm jusqu’à 6mm selon le rendu souhaité. On peut faire de superbe châle avec ou même des pulls très légers. Ce fil change du tout au tout au moment du blocage, l’échantillon s’avère vraiment nécessaire !

This is the lace weight yarn of Ístex. You can knit it with US 1 1/2 to US 10, it all depends of your project. This is the perfect yarn to knit light and beautiful shawls or even some sweaters if you want too. You will have to washed it and blocked before in order to get the exact gauge, so yes, a swatch is a necessary thing if you want to knit a sweater with this one.

Mes impressions / My feelings :

Je ne vais pas vous mentir, ce n’est pas la laine la plus douce à tricoter mais ce n’est pas non plus la plus désagréable. Évidemment, je vous déconseille de passer de la mérinos super douce à la léttlopi, le choc risque d’être terrible ! Je dirais que cela ressemble à de la Holst Garn Supersoft en ce qui concerne les sensations de tricotage. Elle n’accroche pas les aiguilles mais ne glisse pas non plus.

I’m not gonna lie to you, this is not the softer yarn ever but not really even the most unpleasant. Of course, I would not recommend you to knit it right after the softest merino ever. If ever you do it, that will be a great shock to you ! If I had to compare it with another yarn, I will tell it looks like the Holst Garn Supersoft. I felt it was quite closed, it doesn’t stick to the needles but does not slide neither.

Au début, il est conseillé de porter sous le pull un top en coton car la laine peut un peu gratter. Mais le bon côté est que cette laine s’adoucit au lavage et absorbe notre lanoline. A force de le porter, on pourra même le mettre à même la peau.

At the beginning, it’s strongly recommended to wear a coton top under it because the yarn can be a little bit scratchy. But there is 2 good things about this yarn : It’s getting softer once it’s washed and this yarn absorb our lanolin so more you are wearing it and softer it’s getting ! One day, you will wear it on a bare-naked skin and you won’t even noticed it.
