In my previous post « Iceland knitting wokshop with Visit Iceland : Part I » , I’ve wrote about Icelandic knitting history and the sweaters named Lopi. During the workshop, Christine (trÍScote) introduced us the Icelandic wool from the yarn company Ístex and his wonderful wide choice of colours. I’m not a specialist about this yarn, I just knitted for the first time at the workshop but I will try to wrote about it. This is not a solid colour but not even a bicoloured wool. Ístex melt and mix different colours together during the carding process in order to get this kind of colours. That’s how they got a Golden heather, a burnt orange or an artic exposure blue. Once the carding done, the fiber will be spun and here’s what will be get this skeins. This is the bulky yarn. You can knit it with needle’s US 10 or 7mm. This yarn is warm and light, perfect for the outdoors activities. This is the worsterd weight yarn. You can knit it with needle’s US 7. This yarn is warm and light, perfect to do some Fair-Island design and you can wear in for indoor or outdoors activities. This is the unspun yarn. We can knit it with needle’s US 8 and make some lighter sweaters than using Álafosslopi. If the fibers broke, that’s not a big deal at all. You can easily joined the yarns because the fibers is really long. This way, we can do some wonderful shades ! This is the lace weight yarn of Ístex. You can knit it with US 1 1/2 to US 10, it all depends of your project. This is the perfect yarn to knit light and beautiful shawls or even some sweaters if you want too. You will have to washed it and blocked before in order to get the exact gauge, so yes, a swatch is a necessary thing if you want to knit a sweater with this one. I’m not gonna lie to you, this is not the softer yarn ever but not really even the most unpleasant. Of course, I would not recommend you to knit it right after the softest merino ever. If ever you do it, that will be a great shock to you ! If I had to compare it with another yarn, I will tell it looks like the Holst Garn Supersoft. I felt it was quite closed, it doesn’t stick to the needles but does not slide neither. At the beginning, it’s strongly recommended to wear a coton top under it because the yarn can be a little bit scratchy. But there is 2 good things about this yarn : It’s getting softer once it’s washed and this yarn absorb our lanolin so more you are wearing it and softer it’s getting ! One day, you will wear it on a bare-naked skin and you won’t even noticed it. Some Extra ! If you dream to be like Scarlett Johansonn in the movie « We bought a Zoo », you can knit the exact replica of her lopi ! That’s the design named « Aftur » and you can download it here for free ! Et si tu as aimé ce film, tu as forcément aimé la musique qui est signé du leader du groupe islandais Sigur Rós ! If you loved that movie, you had loved too the soundtrack features by the leader of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós ! And if you want to read an Icelandic writer, I will recommend you « Jar City » (Mýrin) of Arnaldur Indriðason who also was adapted into a movie directed by Baltasar Kormákur. Once again, thank you to Aimee from L’Oisivethé to host this workshop and to Visit Iceland to launch this event. If you want to find some lopi in France, go to my official dealer supplier trÍScote !

When I’ve been contacted by Visit Iceland, the tourism office of Island to participate to the first Icelandic knitting workshop, I’ve said yes right away !! The workshop took place to the teahouse named L’Oisivethé and was running by Christine aka TrÍscote. In first place, we had a little history classes about Island. I’ve learned that the Icelandic people were the biggest exporters of knitted sock and mittens in Europe since the XVII e century until the beginning of the last century, of that I know. Everyone was knitting in this country, men, woman and even the children have to produce a certain amounts of pieces a week. Knitting is such a part of the Icelandic culture that even now, kids have some knitting classes at school, just as same than the mathematics or grammar! Parlons peu, parlons bien, parlons Lopi ! Let’s be brief but to the point, let’s talk about Lopi ! Lopi’s real name (pronounce it Lopay) is in reality Lopapeysa coming from the French word paysan (farmer)! It seems that the French merchant seaman loved this warm, light and waterproof sweaters. Basically that’s the perfect sweater for some really tough weather conditions and very useful too if you’re living near the sea (or if you’re a seaman). This sweater was knitting in round and used to have too some stripes. The Lopi with the geometrical designs are really become popular since the 50’s. So I won’t tell that the French little white and navy blue striped jersey copied the Iceland sweaters but that’s not far from reality… If we do not find much Lopi’s pattern that’s also because Icelandic knitters don’t have! They don’t need to, needles sizes, colours, design; it depends of what they have in their home. That’s better to knit lopi with needles US 7 but nothing can keep you to knit it with US 8 or more! There’s no rule about it or maybe just one, to know your rule of three! What about the designs? They are coming from the imagination of the knitters, a diagram and some leftovers of yarn will determinate the fair island part of the garment. We have to admit too that reading a diagram of Fair Island is so much simpler when we knit in round… (Merci Christine pour ces précisions) Knitting the sweater is really simple too: We knit the body in round until the underarms then we let them aside. We knit the sleeves until the underarms. We assemble the sleeves to the body and put some stitches underarms (on the body and the sleeves) on a cable. This one will be assembled at the end with a grafting technique. Then here we are, the sweater is over ! (Thanks to Christine to help me with this part). So if we want a cardigan, nothing is much simpler! All we have to do is to purl 1 to 2 stitches in the centre of the sweater (that will be the zipper placement). We sew along these 2 stitches to secure the knitting garment then we cut the central stitches. In order to get clean finished touches, we can make a little crochet border. So that’s it, we just have to sew the zipper now and the cardigan is ready. Simple isn’t it? Attention, âme sensible s’abstenir…. Be careful, that’s not for the squeamish! In the part II of the post about Iceland, I will talk to you about the Istex wool, the mini lopi that I knitted during this workshop and there will be a little surprise at the end too! So if you want to learn more about Icelandic knitter history, let’s go to read this Hélène Magnusson’s post « The Icelandic Knitting Tradition« .
